Mr Robert Straw

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee surgery. I treat a wide range of knee conditions, including sports injuries and arthritis.

I provide private care at Nuffield Health Derby Hospital and Derby Private Health. I also work in the NHS at Royal Derby Hospital.

My aim is to reduce your pain, improve your movement and help you return to your normal activities.

I was born in Derby and began my career as a professional footballer with Derby County before moving into medicine.

I studied medicine at the University of Leicester and graduated in 1996. I then completed my orthopaedic training in Nottingham and Derby.

In 2006, I undertook a specialist fellowship in sports knee surgery in New Zealand. I trained with an international expert and gained experience treating elite athletes, including professional rugby players.

I completed further specialist knee training before being appointed as a Consultant Knee Surgeon at Royal Derby Hospital in 2007.

Areas of expertise

I specialise in all aspects of knee surgery, including:

• Knee injuries, particularly sports‑related problems
• Arthritis of the knee (joint wear and stiffness)
• Complex ligament and cartilage injuries
• Acute knee injuries

I also co‑lead an acute knee injuries clinic. This service provides rapid assessment and imaging for knee injuries.

Specialist procedures

I perform a wide range of knee treatments, including:

• Knee replacement surgery (total and partial)
• Partial knee replacement (unicompartmental surgery)
• Knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery to diagnose and treat problems)
• ACL reconstruction (repair of a major knee ligament)
• Meniscal repair (treatment of knee cartilage injuries)
• Osteotomy (surgery to realign the knee and reduce pressure on the joint)

I carry out a high number of procedures each year, including over 100 partial knee replacements.

Innovation and development

I have been involved in developing new surgical techniques. I played a key role in the design and development of the Persona Partial Knee Replacement, which is now used worldwide.

Teaching and training

I am actively involved in training future surgeons. I support specialist knee training and contribute to the development of new surgical techniques.
