About
I am a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Oxford Heart Centre, based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, where I have been practising since 2007.
I specialise in adult heart surgery, with particular expertise in complex mitral valve repair, tricuspid valve surgery, and the treatment of atrial fibrillation.
Approach to patient care
My goal is to provide safe, effective, and personalised care, helping you understand your condition and feel confident about your treatment options.
I understand that heart surgery can feel overwhelming. I aim to provide clear explanations, answer your questions, and support you and your family throughout your treatment journey.
My focus is on achieving the best possible outcomes while ensuring you feel informed, reassured, and cared for every step of the way.
Leadership and commitment to quality
I currently lead the Programme for Complex Mitral Valve Surgery in Oxford and have previously served as Clinical Lead for Cardiac Surgery.
I'm actively involved in shaping cardiothoracic surgery at a national level. My roles include:
- Honorary Secretary of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland
- Founding Thames Valley Training Programme Director for Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Former member of the Specialty Advisory Committee
- Past Chair of the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination Board
These roles ensure I remain at the forefront of surgical standards, training, and innovation.
Education and experience
I completed my specialist training in cardiothoracic surgery at leading UK centres, including Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, and the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. I also undertook an international fellowship in general thoracic surgery and lung transplantation at the University of Toronto, gaining advanced surgical experience.
Alongside my clinical work, I trained in medical research at the University of Cambridge as a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellow. I continue to be actively involved in research, helping to improve outcomes for patients by contributing to national and international clinical trials.
Special interests
I perform the full range of adult cardiac surgery, with a particular focus on:
- Mitral valve repair – especially complex cases, aiming to preserve your natural valve whenever possible
- Tricuspid valve repair
- Atrial fibrillation.
