About

Phil is a highly respected Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon, known for his advanced expertise in shoulder arthroscopy, shoulder replacement surgery, and the treatment of sports‑related shoulder injuries.

With a reputation for exceptional patient care and outstanding surgical outcomes, he attracts patients from across the North  — including a large number of golfers, tennis players and cyclists who value his specialist understanding of upper‑limb performance and overuse injuries.

Patients consistently praise Philip for his clear communication, approachable manner, and commitment to personalised care. He takes time to understand each patient’s symptoms, lifestyle and activity goals, ensuring that decisions — whether surgical or non‑surgical — are made collaboratively and tailored to the individual.

Philip graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2005 and completed extensive surgical training across Merseyside, including time at the internationally renowned Wrightington Hospital, one of the UK’s leading centres for orthopaedic excellence. During this period he also completed a Master of Science degree with Distinction at Salford University, demonstrating his strong academic and research‑based approach to patient care.

After earning his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in 2015, Philip undertook a year of advanced fellowship training in shoulder arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) and shoulder arthroplasty (joint replacement) at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust, working alongside internationally recognised surgeons. This hands‑on experience allowed him to develop highly specialised skills in complex shoulder surgery.

He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust in 2016. Within this busy and respected shoulder unit, Philip routinely treats military personnel, elite and recreational athletes, and patients with complex degenerative shoulder conditions. His ability to understand the mechanics of sport — especially the rotational demands of golf and tennis, and the upper‑limb loading common in cycling — has made him an increasingly popular choice for patients seeking fast, expert assessment and safe return to sport.

Philip now has one of the highest‑volume shoulder replacement practices in the UK, regularly managing complex cases and receiving tertiary referrals from other hospitals for difficult shoulder and elbow problems. Working within one of the UK’s 22 Major Trauma Centres, he has also developed extensive expertise in the surgical management of severe and complex upper‑limb trauma.
