About
Phil Burt is an internationally recognised Chartered Physiotherapist, elite bike fit specialist, and cycling performance innovator with over 20 years of experience working at the highest level of world sport. Before joining the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance (MIHP), Phil spent more than a decade shaping the success of some of the most dominant organisations in modern cycling, including British Cycling and Team Sky.
As Head Physiotherapist at British Cycling (2006–2017), Phil helped drive an era of unprecedented Olympic success, contributing to 27 Olympic medals across three Games, including 16 golds. He played a central role within Chris Boardman’s renowned Secret Squirrel Club, pioneering cutting-edge technologies and the concept of marginal gains that transformed global cycling performance standards.
From 2010 to 2017, Phil also served as Consultant Physiotherapist to Team Sky, supporting riders to five Tour de France victories with champions including Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome. His work in injury prevention, biomechanics, positional optimisation, and long-form performance strategy supported athletes through the unique physical demands of Grand Tour racing.
Today at the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance, Phil applies this world-leading expertise to cyclists of every level—from elite athletes to recreational riders seeking improved performance, comfort, and long-term health. His approach combines musculoskeletal medicine, sports medicine, biomechanics, and advanced bike fitting to deliver completely individualised solutions grounded in clinical excellence and decades of real-world elite sport insight.
Phil is widely recognised for his innovation, having influenced cycling globally. He is credited with improving international competition rules, including leading the 2015 update to the UCI saddle tilt regulations to reduce pain and injury risk for riders.
Alongside clinical work, Phil is a respected educator, keynote speaker, and bestselling author. His publications include:
- “Bike Fit: Optimise Your Bike Position for High Performance and Injury Avoidance” (Bloomsbury Sport) – a leading global reference for cyclists and physiotherapists
- “Strength and Conditioning for Cyclists” (2018) – bridging off-bike training with on-bike performance
- Contributing author to Brukner & Khan’s “Sports Medicine” (2017)
Phil is also an adviser and innovation partner to major sports brands. Through Phil Burt Innovation, he collaborates with leading global companies to design and test new technologies, including advanced saddle developments and performance products. His long-standing partnership with Endura has already helped create one of the most successful and comfortable women’s cycling garments to date.
A regular contributor to international media—including Eurosport, GCN, national newspapers, and specialist cycling publications—Phil remains at the forefront of translating elite performance science into practical expertise for every cyclist.
