About
Mr Niteen Tapuria is a highly experienced consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon with a subspecialty interest in hepatobiliary pancreas surgery (diseases of the liver, gallbladder, bile duct and pancreas) and more than 30 years of general surgery experience.

He has a high-volume general surgical practice, including emergency surgery, at his current NHS base. Specialist training
Mr Tapuria qualified in 1992 followed by a MS in general surgery from Delhi University and completed his higher specialist surgical training in general and hepatobiliary pancreatic surgery across London’s most prestigious hospitals including UCLH, Royal Free Hospital, Royal Marsden Hospital and King’s College Hospital.
Additionally, he completed the McMaster fellowship at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and a fellowship in Robotic surgery at University Hospital, Pisa.
Clinical experience
He was appointed as a HPB consultant at Royal Liverpool prior to moving to his current NHS base at Milton Keynes.
- Laparoscopic (keyhole) gallbladder and biliary surgery: Mr Tapuria has a special interest in diseases of the gallbladder such as gallstones and gallbladder dyskinesia and have a high volume practice in managing these conditions with extensive experience in managing acute gallstone disease, having performed more than 1200 laparoscopic cholecystectomies.
- Laparoscopic (keyhole) groin hernia surgery: All patients with groin hernia regardless of symptoms should be offered a consultation as the long term outcome of early operation is better than wait and watch policy even in asymptomatic hernia according to recently published international guidelines. Mr Tapuria has a special interest in performing laparoscopic groin hernia operations. He has been to Belgium to train and learn new approaches in robotic surgery in groin hernia.
- Abdominal wall hernia and complex abdominal wall reconstruction (laparoscopic/open): Mr Tapuria adopts a multidisciplinary team approach to complex abdominal wall reconstruction, including both open and minimally invasive techniques. Abdominal wall hernia result in poor quality of life due to poor abdominal wall function, and surgical treatment can offer a significant improvement in quality of life. He offers laparoscopic and open approaches to management of abdominal wall hernia, incisional hernia, umbilical and paraumbilical hernia. He has learnt new approaches in robotic surgery in abdominal wall hernia repair and reconstruction at specialist centres in Belgium.
- Acute surgery (laparoscopic/open): Mr Tapuria has a high volume practice in emergency surgery and perform laparoscopic appendicectomy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, diagnostic laparoscopy for abdominal pain, laparoscopic adhesiolysis, small bowel resection, colectomy, laparoscopic duodenal perforated ulcer repair.

Research
Mr Tapuria is a recipient of the European Society of Surgical Oncology Fellowship and Peter Samuel Grant. Mr Tapuria was awarded an MD in 2008 from the University College of London for his research work which demonstrated the protective role of preconditioning on organs by regulation of endothelial function. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. He is a reviewer for the British Journal of Surgery.
