About
Michael Silva is a Consultant Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic (HPB) and General Surgeon, appointed at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2009. He completed Higher Surgical Training in the West Midlands UK.
He treats the full spectrum of HPB disease, including gallstone, biliary and pancreatic disorders such as pancreatitis, and cancers of the liver, biliary system and pancreas. He has a special interest in bile duct injuries after surgery and offers total pancreatectomy with islet auto-transplantation for select chronic pancreatitis patients; he is the Oxford lead for this national programme. He is one of the pioneers of robotic HPB surgery in Oxford.
Currently he is Clinical Lead for HPB surgery in Oxford and previously chaired the Liver Cancer MDT. He is a Clinical Lecturer at Worcester College, Oxford University. He was Training Programme Director for Higher Surgical Trainees, Oxford Deanery (2018–2023). He is also National Director of Foundation Trainees Surgical Societies UK, a former Council Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2022–2023) and was Director of the Surgical Advisory Network (2018–2022). He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers and received the Faculty of Surgical Trainers Medal in 2021, a national award for exceptional service to surgical training.
He has served as an advisor to NICE serves on several
editorial boards and has 90+ publications and multiple book chapters.

He has in excess of 40 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and has written many book chapters on his speciality subjects.
Research into liver injury caused by Ischaemia and Steatosis (Fat Deposition) in the liver, total pancreatectomy and islet autotransplantation, and bile duct injuries.
