Mr Matthew Moran

Mr Matthew Moran is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and surgical management of hip and knee conditions, with particular expertise in joint replacement surgery, arthroscopy, trauma surgery and the treatment of early arthritis. Based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, he provides comprehensive orthopaedic care for patients with joint pain, mobility problems, sports injuries, degenerative conditions and complex musculoskeletal disorders.

Mr Moran has extensive experience in all aspects of hip and knee surgery, including total hip replacement, total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, hip resurfacing, revision (redo) joint replacement surgery, and advanced joint preservation procedures. He has particular expertise in modern orthopaedic techniques, including ceramic-on-ceramic hip replacement, computer-assisted surgery, and implant technologies designed to optimise function, durability and patient outcomes.

He graduated from the University of Oxford in 1996 following seven years of medical training, which included a dedicated year of medical research. He subsequently completed his specialist Orthopaedic Surgery training in South East Scotland, developing a strong interest in lower limb surgery, joint reconstruction and biomechanical aspects of orthopaedic care. Reflecting his passion for innovation and technology in surgery, he was awarded an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering in 2006.

As part of his specialist training, Mr Moran completed a senior fellowship at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia, where he gained advanced experience in primary hip and knee replacement surgery, complex revision arthroplasty, bone reconstruction procedures and the management of challenging orthopaedic cases. This training enhanced his expertise in treating patients with failed joint replacements, severe arthritis, implant complications and complex reconstructive conditions.

In recognition of his clinical expertise, Mr Moran was awarded a European Travelling Fellowship by the British Hip Society in 2005, during which he visited the internationally recognised ENDO-Klinik in Hamburg, a leading centre for joint replacement and revision surgery. In 2007, he was selected as the Edinburgh North American Travelling Fellow, further expanding his knowledge of advanced orthopaedic procedures, surgical techniques and patient safety initiatives.

Since his appointment as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2009, Mr Moran has developed a busy NHS and private practice focused almost exclusively on hip and knee conditions. His clinical practice includes the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of:

As a member of the internationally renowned Orthopaedic Trauma Unit at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Mr Moran is also involved in the treatment of complex fractures, soft tissue injuries, lower limb trauma, upper limb injuries and spinal trauma. His expertise covers the management of acute injuries from diagnosis through to surgery, rehabilitation and recovery.

Committed to delivering the highest standards of patient care, Mr Moran routinely audits his surgical outcomes through local and national quality assurance programmes. He is actively involved in the Scottish Patient Safety Programme, helping to improve clinical outcomes, surgical standards and patient safety across orthopaedic services.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Moran is heavily involved in orthopaedic research, surgical education and postgraduate training. He serves as faculty on national and international orthopaedic courses, is a Course Director for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), reviews research for several leading orthopaedic journals, and plays a key role in training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons through the South East Scotland Orthopaedic Training Committee.
