About

Matthew Hubble is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, practicing at Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital and The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Hubble specialises in hip surgery including primary and revision hip joint replacement. He is one of the UKs most experienced hip surgeons, having performed or supervised several thousand hip replacements and is one of the leading specialists in the South West for complex and revision hip surgery. He was one of the first surgeons in the UK to be trained to use the surgical robot for hip surgery and teaches on the Mako robot training courses.

Matthew studied medicine at London University and graduated from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1989, where he was awarded the Beaney Prize for Surgery. Before University he served in the British Army with the Gurkhas in Hong Kong and was then for several years an army reserve Medical Officer with the Parachute Regiment. He passed the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1993, and also of Ireland (FRCSI) the same year. He trained in orthopaedic surgery in Bristol and the South West and was a research fellow and later lecturer in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Bristol from 1995 to 2000. His research included studying the long-term outcome of primary and revision total hip replacements, and the use of bone grafts in revision hip surgery. He was awarded a Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellowship and a Wellcome Trust Grant for this work. He obtained the Royal Surgical Colleges Diploma in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 1999. In 2000 he then undertook a surgical fellowship in Melbourne, Australia, specialising in hip and complex trauma surgery.

Matthew was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon in Exeter in 2001, operating at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre and the Exeter Nuffield Hospital. He specialises in hip surgery and is an active member of the Exeter hip development group and undertakes research and education programmes in the use of the Exeter hip system. In 2009 he was appointed as the lead clinician for trauma and hip fracture surgery in Exeter and then in 2012 as the Clinical Director of the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre, until 2015.
