About
Mr Matthew Hubble is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with over two decades of experience in hip surgery. He specialises in primary and revision hip replacement, including complex cases, and is one of the UK’s most experienced hip surgeons. He has performed or supervised several thousand hip replacements and is a leading specialist in the South West for revision hip surgery.
Mr Hubble was among the first surgeons in the UK trained to use the Mako robotic system for hip replacement and now teaches on national training courses for robotic hip surgery.
Mr Hubble studied medicine at London University, graduating from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1989, where he received the Beaney Prize for Surgery. Before university, he served with the Gurkhas in Hong Kong, and later as a reserve Medical Officer with the Parachute Regiment.
He achieved his FRCS (England) and FRCSI (Ireland) in 1993. His orthopaedic training took place in Bristol and the South West, where he also worked as a Research Fellow and Lecturer in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Bristol. His research focused on long‑term outcomes of hip replacements and the use of bone grafts in revision surgery, supported by a Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellowship and a Wellcome Trust Grant.
He completed his FRCS (Tr&Orth) in 1999 and went on to a specialist fellowship in Melbourne, Australia, focusing on hip and complex trauma surgery.
Mr Hubble was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon in Exeter in 2001, working at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre and Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital. He is an active member of the Exeter Hip Development Group, contributing to ongoing research, innovation, and education in the Exeter hip system.
