About

Matthew graduated from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in 1986 and undertook surgical training in London and South East England. He obtained a Master of Surgery degree in 1999 for research into small bowel transplantation. In 2001 he was appointed consultant liver transplant surgeon at King’s College Hospital, London, where at various times he was Clinical Director for Surgery, Surgical Tutor and Foundation Training Programme Director.

In 2009 Matthew moved to Devon with his family, his clinical focus shifting from liver transplantation to surgery for cancer of the liver and pancreas. He is also part of the team treating patients with retroperitoneal sarcoma. He has a significant emergency and routine ‘general’ surgical workload, particularly for patients with gallstones and hernias, who make up the majority of his patients at the Nuffield Hospital.

Matthew was Director of Medical Education at Derriford Hospital between 2014 and 2020. He was elected Chair of the Derriford Hospital Medical Staff Committee in 2021. Having been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship examinations since 2004, he now assesses the performance of other examiners.

In his spare time Matthew enjoys family walks on Dartmoor and in Snowdonia and holidays in warm places in their caravan.
