About
Mark Johnston is a Consultant ENT and Head & Neck Surgeon who graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1990, achieving both his MBChB and a first‑class honours BSc in Pathological Sciences. He remained in Birmingham for his early training before undertaking higher surgical training in ENT within the East Midlands, based at Queen’s Medical Centre, Leicester Royal Infirmary, and Derby Royal Infirmary over a six‑year period.
He was appointed Consultant ENT and Head & Neck Surgeon at the Royal Derby Hospital in 2003. His clinical expertise includes diseases of the ear, complex mastoid surgery, and conditions of the nose and sinuses, including nasal trauma. He runs both specialist and general ENT clinics for adults and provides a comprehensive paediatric ENT service. Paediatric clinics for NHS and private patients are based at Derby Children’s Hospital, and he also holds peripheral clinics at Ilkeston and Heanor Hospitals.
Mr Johnston has held several senior leadership and educational roles, including Regional Training Programme Director for ENT higher surgical trainees in the East Midlands for six years and Clinical Lead for ENT surgical specialties through the University of Nottingham. He is a member of ENT‑UK (The British Association of Otolaryngologists, Head and Neck Surgeons), the British Rhinological Society, and the Midlands Institute of Otolaryngology.
Outside of clinical practice, he is married with two children and remains an active sportsman. Notably, he has played senior rugby for Derby RFC alongside his son for the past three years and has raised significant funds for multiple charities through family‑based endurance events.
