About

I'm a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Head & Neck Surgeon based in Derby. I have over 20 years of experience and have been a Consultant at the Royal Derby Hospital since 2003.

Education

I qualified in medicine from the University of Birmingham in 1990. I gained my medical degree (MBChB) and a first‑class honours degree in Pathological Sciences.

I completed my early training in Birmingham. I then undertook specialist ENT training in the East Midlands. This included working at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, Leicester Royal Infirmary and Derby Royal Infirmary.

Teaching and leadership

I have held senior roles in medical education. I was the Regional Training Programme Director for ENT trainees in the East Midlands for six years. I have also worked as Clinical Lead for ENT surgical training through the University of Nottingham.

My aim is to provide clear advice and effective treatment. I will work with you to understand your condition and help you feel informed and supported throughout your care.

Outside of work, Mr Johnston is married with two children and enjoys sport. He has played senior rugby for Derby Rugby Club alongside his son and has taken part in endurance events to raise money for charity
