About

I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in eye surgery. I treat a range of eye conditions, including cataracts, corneal conditions (problems with the front of the eye), glaucoma and dry eye. I also carry out laser vision correction.

I work as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Royal Derby Hospital. I also see private patients at Nuffield Health Derby Hospital. I carry out a large number of procedures each year.

Surgical experience

I have extensive experience in eye surgery, including:

  • Over 10,000 cataract operations (surgery to remove a cloudy lens and improve vision)
  • More than 1,000 premium lens implants for private patients
  • Over 500 corneal transplants (replacement of the front surface of the eye)
  • More than 200 glaucoma operations, including trabeculectomy (surgery to reduce pressure in the eye)

I am one of a small number of surgeons in the UK who performs over 1,000 cataract procedures each year.

Education

I completed my specialist ophthalmology training in Oxford. This gave me broad experience in eye conditions and surgery.

I then completed advanced training in Australia at Royal Perth Hospital. During this time, I developed expertise in:

  • Cataract surgery
  • Corneal transplants
  • Laser eye surgery
  • Glaucoma surgery
  • Eye surface conditions

I also undertook further specialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. I focused on complex eye surface conditions.

  • Cataract surgery and premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), including multifocal and toric lens implants
  • Laser eye surgery, including SMILE, LASIK, LASEK, PTK and PRESBYOND
  • Refractive lens exchange (RLE) or clear lens extraction for reduction of spectacle dependence
  • Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL) for high refractive errors
  • Corneal transplantation, including endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK)
  • Surgical management of keratoconus (cross‑linking, intacs, penetrating keratoplasty)
  • Glaucoma surgery (including trabeculectomy), management and ongoing follow‑up, including visual field assessment
  • Minor eyelid procedures including stye (chalazion) and eyelid cyst removal
  • Dry eye diagnosis and management.

My research focuses primarily on cataract and corneal surgery, with a particular emphasis on optimising unaided (glasses‑free) visual outcomes following surgery. My work aims to refine techniques and technologies that improve refractive accuracy, visual quality and patient satisfaction.

I've led two randomised controlled trials investigating:

  • Recurrent corneal erosion syndrome – evaluating treatment strategies to improve corneal stability and patient comfort.
  • Aspheric intraocular lenses – assessing visual outcomes and refractive performance to enhance postoperative spectacle independence.
