Mr Julian Smith is a Consultant Urological Surgeon working at the University Hospital Southampton, as well as the Bournemouth Nuffield. He specialises in Urological Oncology and in particular major pelvic surgery for bladder cancer. In conjunction with his colorectal colleagues, Mr Smith has expertise in major pelvic exenterative surgery for advanced pelvic cancer.  His other interests include prostate cancer screening, diagnostics and treatments, urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary symptoms and general urology. Mr Smith graduated from Imperial College London in 2002 before commencing his basic surgical training at the Royal Surrey Hospital. He subsequently completed a 2 years in clinical research post at Guy's and St. Thomas Hospital in London. The focus of his research was prostate cancer, prostate cancer diagnostics and robotic surgery. Those studies led him to write and publish a thesis on transperineal template prostate biopsies. He then went on to his higher training in Wessex.

Having a patient-centred approach, Mr Julian Smith has been working on improving the experience for his patients. He established the local Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) for patients after major pelvic urological surgery.  This work was recognised nationally, where he was nominated for the BAUS John Anderson Award, before going on to write the national guidelines.  He then extended this work internationally with the Societe Internationale d'Urologie (SIU).  Allied to this he runs a charity section, ACTION Urology, part of Southampton Hospital Charity as he constantly pushes to support his patients.
