About

Mr Phillips treats patients with conditions of the knee, specialising in knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), knee joint replacement and trauma surgery. He performs unicompartmental, total and revision knee replacements.

Mr Phillips was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Exeter in January 2015 after completing his specialist training in the East Midlands. He undertook Fellowships training in knee surgery in Exeter and Nottingham, and he undertook a Travelling Fellowship to Chicago.

He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2013. He now works as one of the knee specialists at the renowned Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

To complement his training, Mr Phillips also completed a Master’s Degree in Sports Medicine at the University of Bath, receiving a merit award. He was also a Medical Team Leader on the athletics track at the London 2012 Olympics, treating injured athletes.

Mr Phillips maintains an active commitment to training, research and governance. He is on the advisory board of both Beyond Compliance and ODEP, national committees that evaluate new knee implants to ensure patient safety. He is on the editorial board of the popular BJ360 orthopaedic journal, and he is also a member of the prestigious AO trauma faculty that trains surgeons in trauma surgery.

Mr Phillips is currently the revision knee network lead for the South West Peninsula region, and is a member of national working groups setting standards for primary and revision knee replacement.

Mr Phillips has many years of experience in robotic knee surgery and invited on teaching courses to teach other consultant knee surgeons how to use the Mako robot for knee replacement.

Personal interests

Mr Phillips enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, going for walks on Dartmoor or on the coast. He is a keen sportsman and enjoys playing rugby, tennis, padel and cricket. His family have recently completed all of the three Peaks - Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis.

Research

Mr Phillips is involved in active research in knee surgery and has published in major orthopaedic journals as well as speaking regularly both locally, nationally and internationally as an invited speaker. His main research interests are in knee replacement surgery and the challenges associated with this surgery. 

His specialist interest is in knee replacement surgery and robotics, revision surgery and complex reconstruction. He is regularly referred patients for tertiary referral or second opinions. 

Mr Phillips is the Clinical Lead for knee surgery at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, as well as being the Regional Lead for the South West Revision Knee Network. 

He has been involved in regulation of joint replacements for many years as a member of the ODEP and Beyond Compliance committees, and is on the Editorial Committee for the National Joint Registry. He was involved in writing the UK Guide for Good Practice for primary and revision knee replacement surgery.

Mr Phillips’ practice is based on high quality evidence-based medicine. He is currently involved in a number of local and national randomised controlled trials in knee surgery that are being undertaken at the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit. 

He has over sixty peer-reviewed publications in research journals, as well as a number of review articles on trauma, infection and follow up after knee replacement. He regularly reviews articles for research journals. 

As part of his Master’s degree in sports and exercise medicine, he prepared a thesis on multiligament knee injuries.
