About
Mr Jim Tiernan is a highly experienced Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon based in Leeds, specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of bowel, rectal and anal conditions.
Patients choose Mr Tiernan for his combination of specialist expertise, compassionate care and access to advanced colorectal surgical techniques. He provides expert assessment and treatment for rectal cancer, haemorrhoids, anal fistula, anal fissure, pilonidal disease, hernias, colon cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He also performs diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy.
Mr Tiernan understands that symptoms affecting the bowel and anal region can be distressing and sometimes difficult to discuss. He is committed to providing clear explanations, rapid access to diagnosis and personalised treatment plans designed around each patient's needs and preferences.

Mr Tiernan is Chair of the Leeds Colorectal MDT and co-leads a national referral service for advanced and recurrent rectal cancer surgery.
He graduated from the University of Sheffield Medical School and completed higher surgical training throughout Yorkshire before being awarded the gold medal in the Royal College of Surgeons FRCS examination. He subsequently completed a fellowship in advanced colorectal surgery at the internationally renowned Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA.
Alongside his clinical training, he completed a PhD focused on innovative imaging technologies for colorectal cancer surgery, work that led to multiple scientific publications and awards, and maintains a strong research interest as Specialty Lead for the Royal College of Surgeons.
Research and innovation
Mr Tiernan has an active national and international research profile. He helped lead a major national trial investigating surgical treatments for haemorrhoids that was published in The Lancet and received the BJS Best Paper Prize at the European Society of Coloproctology. He is the surgical lead for the Yorkshire Cancer Research ‘Bowel Cancer Improvement Program’.
