About
Jim Tiernan is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds.
He offers private consultations and treatments for proctological treatments, with particular expertise in haemorrhoids, anal fistulae, anal fissures and pilonidal disease.
He also offers consultations and treatments for colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease and performs colonoscopy.
Education
He graduated from the University of Sheffield Medical School in 2004 and undertook his surgical training throughout Yorkshire prior to being awarded the Gold Medal for outstanding performance in the Royal College of Surgeons consultant examination.
He followed this with a one-year fellowship in the USA in advanced colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. During his surgical training he also undertook a PhD in nanobiotechnology, developing an intra-operative imaging system for minimally invasive colorectal cancer resection, leading to multiple publications and prizes.
Leadership
In the NHS he co-leads a national referral practice for high complexity pelvic exenteration for advanced/recurrent rectal cancer, and chairs the Leeds Colorectal Cancer MDT.
At national level, he is the Royal College of Surgeons Specialty Lead for Colorectal Surgery and an elected member of the ACPGBI Advanced Cancer Committee.
He is also the Deputy TPD for Yorkshire & Humber Higher Surgical Training, and Surgical Lead for the Yorkshire Cancer Research Bowel Cancer Improvement Programme (BCIP).

He helped lead a national trial into surgical treatments for haemorrhoids, which was published in The Lancet and for which he won the BJS Best Paper prize at the European Society of Coloproctology in Milan.
