About
Mr Jibin Francis qualified as a neurosurgeon in 2012 and has focused his practice on spinal surgery since 2018. He was appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, in 2019, with a specialist interest in spinal neurosurgery.
He completed advanced spinal fellowships at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, followed by a combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal fellowship in Cambridge.
His practice encompasses the full spectrum of complex spinal neurosurgery, including spinal tumours, traumatic spinal injuries, spinal infections, and degenerative spinal conditions.
Mr Francis specialises in minimally invasive and keyhole (tubular) spinal surgery, performing these techniques in the majority of cases involving disc prolapse and spinal stenosis.
Many procedures can be undertaken as day-case surgery, promoting faster recovery and reduced postoperative pain.
In 2023, he introduced full endoscopic spinal surgery in Cambridge, further advancing ultra-minimally invasive spinal care in the region. These techniques aim to achieve equivalent surgical outcomes while minimising tissue disruption, hospital stay, and rehabilitation time.
His clinical expertise includes the treatment of neck pain, back pain, arm pain (cervical radiculopathy), leg pain (sciatica), spinal trauma, spinal tumours, syringomyelia, and degenerative spinal disorders. He also has a specialist interest in the neurosurgical management of spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH).
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Francis is actively involved in neurosurgical education and training. He serves as Specialty Lead for undergraduate neurosurgical teaching and contributes to postgraduate neurosurgical training nationally as faculty on multiple specialist courses. He is Lead for Spinal Services at Cambridge University Hospitals and previously held the role of Clinical Lead for the East of England Spinal Network.
