About

Mr James Hewes is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon at Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital. He believes obesity is a stigmatising and damaging disease, not a lifestyle choice and is passionate about the transformative changes in health and wellbeing that weight loss interventions provide.

Working with Verve Health Group, Mr Hewes provides all types of laparoscopic (keyhole) weight loss procedures, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding. He also performs revision procedures such as band adjustment or replacement, or conversion to different bariatric operations.

He has performed over 700 major weight loss procedures, and developed an outstanding national-leading enhanced recovery programme. He is dedicated to improving outcomes in surgery and has an excellent safety profile, as published nationally via the Surgeon Specific Outcome dataset, available from the National Bariatric Surgery Registry.

Verve Health Group is dedicated to multidisciplinary working practices that include experts in bariatric surgery, dietetics, psychology, anaesthetics, pharmacology and radiology. Together, they provide an holistic package and outstanding support throughout this life changing process, while the team at Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital offer state-of-the-art perioperative care in a welcoming environment.

Mr Hewes’ NHS practise is at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, which is the regional tertiary referral bariatric centre, at which he was the lead clinician for over 10 years. He is particularly interested in education and debunking many of the myths and prejudice surrounding obesity. He regularly gives teaching to GPs and other healthcare professionals, and trains local and visiting surgeons.

In addition to weight loss procedures, Mr Hewes also provides laparoscopic surgery of all types of gallstone disease, usually performed as day case or enhanced recovery short stay.
