About

Mr James Gibbs is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon seeing patients at Nuffield Health Brighton and Haywards Heath hospitals. He specialises in hip and knee surgery, including joint replacement, sports injuries, ligament reconstruction and complex trauma and is one of the region's leading experts in robotic surgery, including as an invited speaker in the field.

He has been a consultant hip and knee surgeon since 2011, and his background is notably broad. As well as his elective practice, he has worked within the regional Major Trauma Service, managing pelvic and acetabular fractures, and within a Complex Arthroplasty Unit, dealing with particularly difficult joint replacement cases. That depth of experience across both planned surgery and complex trauma informs a practice that handles a wide range of patients and presentations.

Outside medicine, Mr Gibbs is the founder and Chief Officer of Gam Med, a medical charity working to raise healthcare standards in The Gambia, where he regularly travels to teach, train, and operate.

Why patients choose Mr Gibbs

His practice covers a genuinely wide spectrum from keyhole surgery for a ligament injury through to robotic joint replacement and complex revision cases, and his background in major trauma adds a layer of technical experience that not all elective hip and knee surgeons have. He holds an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University, with a thesis focused on the thermal effects of drilling in bone, which reflects a technically precise approach to his craft.

He describes his practice as defined by warmth, professional integrity, and open communication, with a strong emphasis on helping patients understand their conditions well enough to make informed decisions about their care.
