About
Mr Ian Sharpe is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in conditions of the foot and ankle. He has been caring for patients in Exeter since 2003 and is known nationally and internationally for his expertise in ankle arthritis and ankle replacement surgery.
Mr Sharpe graduated from St Mary’s Hospital, London, in 1991 and completed his surgical and orthopaedic training in the South West of England, followed by specialist fellowships in Sydney and Seattle. He gained his FRCS (Tr&Orth) accreditation in 2001.
Within the NHS, he works at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where he established the Foot and Ankle Unit—now one of the largest specialist teams in the UK. He has also held senior leadership roles, including Clinical Lead for Trauma and Clinical Director of the Orthopaedic Centre.
Mr Sharpe also consults privately at the Exeter Foot and Ankle Clinic at the Nuffield Hospital. He works closely with a dedicated multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for a wide range of foot and ankle problems.
His clinical interests include ankle replacement, management of ankle arthritis, complex foot and ankle deformities, and sports injuries. Alongside his clinical work, he remains active in research and education, regularly publishing and presenting at national and international meetings.
Other interests
Mr Sharpe specialises in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery – including hallux valgus (bunion) correction, lesser toe deformity, arthroscopic ankle and foot surgery, and has particular expertise in the reconstruction of complex lower limb and foot and ankle injuries.
He is a recognised expert in ankle replacement surgery – both primary and revision surgery. He utilises computer-aided ankle replacement surgery using the Prophecy systems and 3-D printed patient specific implants.
His practice in the private and NHS sector is now solely with problems of the foot and ankle.
