About

Mr Heman Joshi is a Consultant Robotic General and Colorectal Surgeon at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He also serves as Clinical Director of Digestive Diseases (GI Surgery and Gastroenterology) at Cambridge University Hospitals. 

He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal and general surgical conditions using advanced minimally invasive techniques.

His practice includes bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, pelvic floor disorders, abdominal wall hernias and the full spectrum of proctological conditions, including haemorrhoids, anal fistula, anal fissure and pilonidal disease.

Mr Joshi has a particular interest in robotic colorectal surgery and is experienced in multi-platform robotic surgery using both the Intuitive da Vinci and CMR Versius robotic systems. Over 90% of his major colorectal operations are performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic techniques, helping patients recover more quickly with less pain and shorter hospital stays.

He is also a high-volume colonoscopist, fully accredited within the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, and trained in advanced optical diagnosis and therapeutic colonoscopy, enabling real-time assessment and treatment of colorectal polyps while supporting the early detection and prevention of bowel cancer.

Education

Mr Joshi completed a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) at the University of Oxford, where his research focused on pelvic floor dysfunction. He remains actively involved in clinical research as a co-investigator on national and international studies and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications.

He completed an International Fellowship in Robotic Surgery in South Korea and is an accredited robotic surgery proctor, supporting the training of other surgeons. 

Teaching

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Joshi is committed to education, innovation and service improvement. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Cambridge and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate doctors, surgical trainees and research fellows.

Leadership

Nationally, Mr Joshi serves on the Executive Committee of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) as External Affairs Chair, leading collaborations with UK and international surgical organisations to advance education, research and innovation in colorectal surgery.
