About

Mr Gokul Vignesh Kanda Swamy is a Consultant Urological Surgeon based out of Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB).

He holds a particular interest in robotic and minimally invasive urological oncology, specialising in prostate, bladder and pelvic cancers.

Mr Kanda Swamy performs high volumes of robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) and robotic cystectomy, as well as complex pelvic exenteration surgery in collaboration with colorectal, gynaecological and plastic surgery colleagues.

He offers the full range of minimally invasive treatments for benign prostatic obstruction including iTind, Urolift, and Aquablation, and is experienced in vasectomy reversal.

Leadership

He holds several significant national and international roles in Urology.

He is Chair of the Welsh Urological Society, President of the International British Urology Society (IBUS), Welsh Lead for the National Prostate Cancer Audit (NPCA), and Secretary for BAUS section of Oncology.

He holds an Honorary Senior Lectureship at Swansea University Medical School and is an active principal investigator across several NIHR-funded multicentre clinical trials.

He has been awarded the Clinical Excellence Award by the UK Department of Health and Social Care, and has won multiple national academic prizes and research grants.

Teaching and research

He is a regular invited international speaker in SIU, USICON, SZUSICON, international training bootcamps and in IBUS and BAUS.

He publishes regularly and runs many collaborative projects shaping tomorrow’s urology landscape. He offers prompt assessment, personalised expert advice and access to the full range of urological diagnostic and surgical treatments.

Mr Kanda Swamy is passionate about community health education and public engagement. He is a trustee in the local charity ISSW (Indian Society of South West Wales). He arranges and runs the free community health lecture series in Swansea and West Wales. He also has interests in medical education, simulation training and global urology.

He plays for Swansea Medical and Mumbles Indians Cricket teams in Swansea, travels following Cricket tournaments across the World. He believes in ‘Karma’ & ‘Pale blue dot” philosophies.

Mr Kanda Swamy is a highly active clinical researcher. He is Principal Investigator for several NIHR-funded and sponsored trials including Bladder-Path (NIHR HTA), REINFORCE (University of Oxford), OPEN (Newcastle University), and Add-Aspirin (CRUK/NIHR), RESECT & WASHOUT (BURST group) & ELIPSE (Univ of Aberdeen).

He is the lead applicant for Raman Spectroscopy for Prostate cancer study funded by TUF(The Urology Foundation).

He has led grant-funded research totalling over £500,000, including a £389,000 Prostate Cancer UK grant (2022) investigating extracellular vesicle glycoproteins as novel prostate cancer biomarkers, and a £100,000 Cancer Research UK grant (2021) in developing biomarkers for Prostate Cancer.

He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications in journals including BJU International, British Journal of Surgery, World Journal of Surgery and European Urology.

He is Honorary Senior Lecturer at Swansea University Medical School and supervises clinical research fellows and postgraduate students.

He is a regular invited speaker on research and clinical updates and patient management.
