- Overview
About
Mr Gareth Llewelyn Roberts is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip conditions — from the earliest stages of hip pain through to advanced arthritis requiring joint replacement.
He has a particular focus on hip preservation surgery for younger and active patients, including those with hip impingement (FAI), hip dysplasia, and early arthritis. Where the joint can be saved, he offers hip arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) and periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) — a specialist procedure to correct hip socket alignment and prevent early arthritis. He is one of a small number of surgeons in Wales offering PAO as a regional service.
When hip replacement is the right option, Mr Roberts offers patients a choice of surgical approach. He performs both the traditional posterior approach and the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) — including the bikini incision technique, which leaves a scar hidden within the natural skin crease. He is trained and practising in robotic-assisted hip replacement (MAKO system), which uses real-time 3D imaging to improve implant positioning and potentially speed recovery.
Mr Roberts trained in Wales, with fellowships in Bristol and London, and has undertaken observational visits to leading hip surgeons across Europe and the United States. His NHS practice is based at University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough, and he holds a research doctorate (MD) in hip fractures.
He believes patients deserve the time and information to understand their options fully before making any decision about surgery.
