About

Mr Francesco Di Chiara MS THOR (Hons), FEBTS, MD is a distinguished Consultant Thoracic Surgeon and has been in practice in this role since 2016. He is internationally recognised for his expertise in advanced minimally invasive surgery, with specialist interests in thoracic endometriosis, thoracic outlet syndrome, rib fractures, lung cancer, and catamenial pneumothorax. He pioneered the introduction of uniportal VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery) across several institutions, performing highly complex cases using this single-incision technique and serving as an international proctor and mentor for advanced thoracic procedures.

Educated at Padua Medical School with honours, Mr Di Chiara completed extensive training in thoracic, cardiac, and transplant surgery in Italy and the UK, including at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Birmingham, and Plymouth. He further refined his expertise through visiting fellowships in Shanghai and Chengdu.

His clinical innovations include integrating Oxford into a national NIHR rib fracture trial, developing new devices for rib fixation, and leading global education in chest wall trauma. Notably, he performed the UK’s first allograft sternal and clavicular replacement and invented a minimally invasive approach to thoracic outlet syndrome, eliminating nerve dissection and chest drains. A board member and examiner for the EBCTS, he continues to advance surgical innovation, education, and patient recovery.
