About

Mr Al Jaafari is a highly experienced Consultant Urologist specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and surgical management of a wide range of urological conditions, with particular expertise in endourology (stone disease), laser prostate surgery, and complex urinary drainage procedures. He provides advanced, patient-centred care for individuals with kidney stone disease, benign prostate enlargement and complex urinary tract disorders, using the latest minimally invasive and laser-based surgical techniques.

Mr Al Jaafari completed his medical degree and basic surgical training at "Gr T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iași, Romania, before undertaking specialist urology training in the East of England. During his training, he gained extensive experience across all aspects of urology, including endourology, uro-oncology, robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and the management of complex urinary tract conditions. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Urol) and a Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU).

His specialist practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Kidney stones (renal calculi)
  • Ureteric stones
  • Bladder stones
  • Benign prostate enlargement (BPH)
  • Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)
  • Urinary retention
  • Haematuria (blood in the urine)
  • Urinary obstruction
  • Complex urinary drainage problems
  • Prostate conditions
  • Urological cancers requiring specialist assessment and investigation

Mr Al Jaafari has advanced expertise in endourological procedures, including ureteroscopy, laser stone fragmentation, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), flexible ureterorenoscopy (FURS) and other minimally invasive stone treatments. His aim is to provide effective stone clearance while minimising recovery times and reducing the need for more invasive surgery.

He is particularly recognised for his expertise in laser surgery for benign prostate enlargement, offering state-of-the-art treatments including GreenLight™ Laser Prostatectomy, Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) and UroLift® procedures. These advanced treatments provide effective relief from urinary symptoms caused by enlarged prostate glands while reducing hospital stay, bleeding risk and recovery time compared with traditional surgery.

A further area of specialist interest is extra-anatomical urinary diversion, an innovative procedure used to internalise long-term nephrostomy drains and improve patients' quality of life. He is recognised internationally for his expertise in this field and has helped develop treatment pathways that allow suitable patients to avoid the long-term inconvenience and complications associated with external drainage tubes.

To further develop his subspecialist expertise, Mr Al Jaafari completed a uro-oncology fellowship at UZ Leuven University Hospital, Belgium, where he gained advanced experience in the diagnosis and management of urological cancers. He has also undertaken specialist visits and training at leading European centres of excellence to refine his skills in advanced laser surgery, endourology and minimally invasive urological procedures.

Mr Al Jaafari is committed to delivering evidence-based, personalised care and takes time to ensure that every patient fully understands their diagnosis, treatment options and expected outcomes. He provides comprehensive urological assessment, including specialist investigations such as cystoscopy, ultrasound imaging, uroflowmetry, prostate assessment, PSA testing, and advanced urinary tract diagnostics to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Alongside his clinical practice, he is an active leader in surgical education and training. As a nationally recognised GreenLight Laser Surgery Proctor, he mentors and trains urological surgeons across the UK in advanced laser prostate procedures. He also delivers multiple national training courses in laser prostate surgery, endourology, and extra-anatomical urinary diversion techniques, contributing to the advancement of modern urological practice.

Mr Al Jaafari currently works as a Consultant Urologist at NHS Fife and serves as Honorary Senior Lecturer and Urology Education Lead for ScotGEM at the School of Medicine, University of St Andrews, where he plays a key role in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.

Patients seeking specialist care for kidney stones, enlarged prostate, urinary symptoms, laser prostate surgery, HoLEP, GreenLight Laser treatment, UroLift, urinary retention, nephrostomy management and complex urological conditions benefit from Mr Al Jaafari's extensive surgical expertise, advanced minimally invasive techniques and commitment to delivering outstanding clinical outcomes.
