About

Mr Douglas Ferguson is a highly experienced breast surgeon who has been caring for patients for more than 30 years.

Mr Ferguson became Exeter’s first Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in 2006. He has worked in specialist breast surgery since 1995 and led the breast service from 2009 to 2021. During this time, he helped develop Exeter into a nationally recognised centre of excellence for oncoplastic breast surgery and trained many surgeons through national fellowship programmes.

Mr Ferguson is widely recognised in the UK and internationally as a leading expert in breast surgery. Patients value not only his expertise but also his compassionate and thoughtful approach. He has been offering private breast surgery since 2006.

Education

He studied medicine at St George’s University of London, completing a BSc in 1990 and his medical degree in 1993. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1997 and trained in many leading breast cancer and plastic surgery centres across the south of England.

He also spent time training in a specialist plastic surgery unit in Australia. In 2004 he completed a national fellowship in oncoplastic breast surgery, and in 2005 he achieved a Master’s degree in surgery and was awarded the UK and Ireland Gold Medal for the final surgical fellowship exam – the highest national award.

Teaching

He has advised several NHS Trusts on developing their breast services and completed a postgraduate certificate in medical education in 2018. He has also created and run a number of oncoplastic training courses for surgeons, working with expert faculty and industry partners.

Mr Ferguson is an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Exeter, where he teaches and supports research. He has supervised postgraduate research and is the lead investigator for around 15 national clinical trials. He has chaired sessions at major UK and international breast cancer conferences and helped organise both.

At the Royal Devon and nationally, his roles include Clinical MDT Lead Breast Surgeon, Honorary Treasurer of the Association of Breast Surgery (2020–2025), University Representative for the Trust, Royal College Representative for consultant appointments, and mentor to doctors across the region.
