About
Mr David Birchley has been a full‑time Consultant Vascular Surgeon in Exeter since 2010. He is fully trained and accredited to treat all types of arterial and venous conditions, hernias, and a wide range of general surgical problems. He provides these services both within the NHS and privately.
When you meet with David, he will take time to explain all the treatment options available to you. This includes the choice not to have treatment or, if appropriate, transferring your care to your local NHS service. He believes that no single approach works for everyone, even when patients have the same condition. Your treatment plan will always be tailored to your individual needs.
David also feels strongly that patients should be able to reach him easily if they have questions or worries. He is available by email seven days a week, and all patients are given his contact details.
The results of David’s major arterial surgeries—such as aortic aneurysm repair, carotid endarterectomy, lower‑limb bypass, and amputation—are published by the Vascular Society and can be viewed by the public. He keeps detailed records of his surgical outcomes and is happy to discuss these with you during your consultation.
David’s NHS work is regularly reviewed by his peers to ensure safety and quality. He meets all General Medical Council requirements for independent specialist practice, including ongoing accreditation and revalidation.
