About
Mr Chris Derham is a full time Consultant Neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust since 2014. Following medical school training at the Royal Free Hospital, London, he completed his neurosurgical training in the Yorkshire region and obtained a Doctorate of Medicine with distinction at the University of Leeds in the field of tissue regeneration.
Mr Derham has undertaken the National Spine Fellowship in England and the EANS Neurosurgical fellowship in Innsbruck, Austria. He practices all modalities of Neurosurgery with a sub-specialty interest in complex spinal surgery.
Mr Derham is an advocate for patient safety and the provision of high-quality care in Neurosurgery. This is reflected in his roles in various quality improvement projects at a National level for spinal services (GIRFT/SBNS).
Mr Derham is a proponent of minimally invasive approaches for the management of spinal disorders. He teaches and mentors Neurosurgical trainees and Consultants in the U.K. and Internationally on complex spinal procedures.
Special interests
All aspects of Neurosurgery with a specialist interest in complex spinal pathology including intradural tumour surgery, cranio-cervical junction surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery, cervical spine surgery, thoracic spine surgery, and lumbar spine surgery.

Research
Mr Derham has been involved with collaborative research projects with the University of Leeds and other Neurosurgical centres.
He completed his research MD with distinction in the field of Tissue Regeneration, specifically developing an acellular small diameter vascular graft for reconstructive surgery.
PI (Person in charge) for 2 clinical trials:
1: DISCUSS – this is an emergency spinal neurosurgery randomised controlled trial for Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury. The trial recruits from major trauma centres and follows them up at rehab – spinal injury centres. DISCUS compares surgery including laminectomy plus duraplasty to surgery including laminectomy.
2. POLYFIX DCM Trial – this looks specifically at the surgical options for degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM), comparing laminectomy alone to laminectomy and fusion.
