About
Mr Carlos Heras‑Palou qualified from the School of Medicine in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1988. Following House Officer and Senior House Officer appointments in England, he obtained the FRCS in 1993. He completed higher specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma in Leicester, achieving FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) in 2000.
Mr Heras‑Palou undertook dedicated training in Hand Surgery in Leicester, followed by advanced fellowships in Derby and Oxford. In 2001, he was awarded the prestigious Pulvertaft Fellowship by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH), spending six months at St James’ University Hospital, Leeds.
Later that year, he joined the Pulvertaft Hand Centre as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, with a specialist interest in hand and wrist surgery.
His principal clinical interests include:
- Scaphoid fractures and non‑unions
- Wrist pain and degenerative conditions
- Wrist instability
- Complications following distal radius fractures
He is widely regarded for his expertise in complex wrist pathology and post‑traumatic wrist reconstruction.
Mr Heras‑Palou is actively involved in postgraduate education. He:
- Co‑chairs the Derby Wrist Course alongside Dr Marc Garcia‑Elias
- Is a regular speaker at national and international hand and wrist fracture courses
- Is a longstanding member of the faculty for Hand and Wrist AO Courses
His teaching is highly regarded by trainees and consultants alike.
