About
Mr Balain has been a Consultant Spinal Surgeon since January 2010 at RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry, a Centre of Excellence for Secondary & Tertiary Care Orthopaedics, with Spinal Disorders as a Specialised Commissioned Service in NHS.
He is also the Clinical Chair for Specialist Services Unit at RJAH, as well as the Deputy Medical Director.
Mr Balain has performed over 300 spinal operations every year since 2010 and over 4500 surgeries so far.
Mr Balain deals with all adult pathology including degenerative, trauma, emergency spine presentations, tumours and Spinal Deformities. He regularly performs cervical spine surgeries from anterior & posterior approaches, thoracic open and MIS anterior & posterior approaches, as well as Lumbar spine Anterior and MIS Anterior approaches.
Mr Balain practises MIS Spine surgery and has significant experience in using MIS Spine Surgery in metastatic disease of the spine, degenerative conditions & adult deformity. A big part of his operative workload is dealing with complex revision surgery with MIS techniques.
Mr Balain was the first surgeon in the UK to start using 2nd & 3rd generation Full Endoscopic Spine Surgeries and has been doing them since 2016. He has performed over 500 endoscopic surgeries and has helped develop and spread this technique in the UK.
Mr Balain has mentored other surgeons at the start of their endoscopic experience, including in Stanmore, Oxford, Liverpool and Glasgow.
Endoscopic surgery is a large part of Mr Balain’s practice, and he
regularly uses it in lumbar, cervical, and thoracic spinal procedures in his
NHS practice.
Personal interests
Mr Balain has many interests which include being an avid reader, walking and sketching. He has a keen interest in both basketball, volleyball, table tennis and cricket and currently plays cricket for the RJAH Hospital Team in Oswestry.
