About
Mr Andrew Leather qualified as a doctor in 1985 from Kings College Hospital in London. After starting training as a GP he changed his career plans to become an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. In 2001 he was appointed as a consultant in Ipswich and is now well known and respected as one of the most senior and highly experienced consultants in the speciality.
During his training he developed a special interest in vaginal surgery and treating women with female incontinence and prolapse (urogynaecology) and is recognised not only locally, where he was the lead for the speciality, but also nationally as one of the speciality leaders in the field. In addition to his interest in urogynaecology he has also maintained a large practising profile in all aspects of Gynaecology including laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.
In addition to his clinical work he has always been interested in clinical governance and risk management. He has been a member of both the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) Guidelines committee. Andrew is recognised nationally as a well-respected medico legal expert and as a leader in the speciality whose opinion is often sought as he is known for giving a fair and honest opinion.
Mr Leather is also an educationist and aside from teaching the trainees and future consultants of his specialty he is an examiner for the MRCOG exams and an external college assessor. In 2019 he became the Chair of the RCOG Part 2 EMQ Examination Committee completing his term of office in 2023. Following this he was invited to undertake a new role in the RCOG to develop a mechanism to give feedback to both candidates and examiners about their performance in the MRCOG Part 3 examination. More recently he has been appointed as the RCOG Overseas Accreditation Officer for the RCOG overseas training program.
In 2019 he was elected by his peers to be the East of England Fellows representative on the RCOG Council and in 2022 he was re-elected for a further 3 year term.
Mr Leather undertakes annual appraisals covering all aspects of his practice in keeping with the GMC Guidelines on Good Medical Practice and was re validated in 2023 for a further 5 year period.
