About
Philippa Rust is a highly qualified hand and wrist surgeon, performing the full spectrum of orthopaedic and plastic surgery related to the hand and wrist. She developed a special interest in this field early in her career, drawn by the intricacy of the anatomy and the vital role of hand function in her patients’ daily lives.
Miss Rust trained in London as an Orthopaedic surgeon with a focus on hand and wrist surgery. She then completed a Plastic Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Windsor Hand Clinic in Berkshire. During this time, she became one of the first surgeons to be awarded the Diploma of Hand Surgery by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand.
She went on to complete further fellowships in Australia, gaining expertise in Plastic Microsurgery for the hand at the Bernard O’Brien Institute in Melbourne, and in upper limb complex trauma and reconstruction at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. While in Australia, she also developed advanced skills in surgical techniques that reduce recovery time, including wrist arthroscopy, a keyhole surgery procedure that she is among the few to perform in Scotland.
Since 2010, Miss Rust has been working as a consultant in Edinburgh, with appointments in the Plastic Surgery Unit at St John’s Hospital and the Orthopaedic Unit at the Royal Infirmary. Her practice is entirely dedicated to hand and wrist surgery.
In 2003, she was awarded an MD (Doctor of Medicine) from University College London for her thesis on the tissue engineering of bone and its application in healing defects, a subject on which she has been invited to speak internationally. Miss Rust has received numerous research prizes in the UK and abroad, secured research grants in both the UK and Australia, and has published over 27 research papers.
