About

Dr Waleed Fateen is a consultant hepatologist, gastroenterologist and pancreato-biliary physician based in Oxford and Banbury.

He specialises in the diagnosis and management of digestive, liver, bile duct, gallbladder and pancreatic disorders, with expertise in advanced therapeutic endoscopy.

His practice combines comprehensive gastroenterology care with specialist assessment of liver disease, pancreatic disorders and hepatobiliary conditions. He is committed to providing evidence-based, personalised care tailored to each patient's needs.

Clinical experience

Dr Fateen manages a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions, including:
  • Reflux and indigestion
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Abdominal pain and bloating
  • Diarrhoea and altered bowel habit
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Unexplained weight loss

He also has specialist expertise in liver, pancreatic and biliary disorders, including metabolic liver disease (fatty liver disease), autoimmune liver disease, cirrhosis, portal hypertension and liver cancer.

A key focus of his practice is the evaluation, staging and prevention of liver disease, helping patients understand their liver health and reduce the risk of future complications.

FibroScan assessments

Dr Fateen performs FibroScan assessments to evaluate liver fibrosis and liver stiffness without the need for invasive procedures.

These assessments provide a structured evaluation of liver health and can help identify patients at risk of progressive liver disease, cirrhosis and liver-related complications.

Endoscopic treatments

Dr Fateen has extensive experience in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
He performs:
  • Gastroscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Polypectomy

He also provides endoscopic treatment for complications of liver disease, including the management of oesophageal and gastric varices.

In addition, he performs advanced endoscopic procedures including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic, bile duct, gallbladder and liver disorders.

Approach to care

Dr Fateen's practice emphasises a multidisciplinary and personalised approach to care.

He works closely with hepatobiliary surgeons, radiologists and specialist nurses and collaborates with nutritionists, dietitians and health coaches where appropriate to support patients in improving liver health and managing chronic digestive conditions.

His aim is to provide clear explanations, practical advice and individualised treatment plans that help patients make informed decisions about their health.

Teaching and research

Dr Fateen is actively involved in academic medicine in Oxford, where his research focuses on the early detection of cancer and the development of innovative molecular diagnostic tests.

He has a particular interest in liver cancer, liquid biopsy technologies and the translation of research discoveries into affordable and accessible clinical tests.

He also has a strong interest in developing digital tools and web platforms that improve communication between

specialists, GPs and patients and support greater patient engagement in healthcare and research.
