About
Dr Syed Haris Ahmed is a Consultant Physician specialising in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Medicine at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He also serves as Clinical Lead for Antenatal Diabetes and Digital Health Technologies within the Diabetes Unit.
Dr Ahmed has extensive experience in the management of complex endocrine and metabolic disorders, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes, and obesity-related metabolic disease. He has led multiple service development and quality improvement initiatives aimed at optimising glycaemic control, enhancing maternal–fetal outcomes in diabetic pregnancy, and improving patient engagement through digital health solutions.
He was awarded the Quality in Care Diabetes Award (2019) for developing an innovative pathway to improve outcomes in women with diabetes during pregnancy, including enhanced antenatal monitoring and multidisciplinary care. He also pioneered the implementation of telemedicine (including video consultations) to support antenatal diabetes care, improving access, patient experience, and clinical follow-up. His contributions have been recognised locally with an Outstanding Patient Care Award.
Dr Ahmed is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), an accredited MRCP examiner, and a member of the RCP Question Writing Group for the Specialty Certificate Examination in Diabetes and Endocrinology. He also contributes to regional medicines optimisation as a Consultant Representative on the West Cheshire Area Prescribing Committee, with involvement in formulary decisions and evidence-based prescribing in endocrinology.
He is actively engaged in clinical research, medical education, and academic supervision. He regularly peer reviews for high-impact endocrine and diabetes journals and has published on topics including diabetes technologies, metabolic disease, and endocrine disorders.
Dr Ahmed is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and MBChB Clinical Tutor at the University of Liverpool, where he delivers undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. His roles include facilitating case-based learning, delivering lectures on endocrinology and metabolism, supervising research projects, conducting OSCE and written assessments, and participating in medical student selection processes.
