Dr McLaughlin trained in Medicine at Guy’s, King's and St. Thomas’ Medical Schools, qualifying in 2000. He completed his specialist training in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine in London and South East Thames. In addition to this he undertook two and-a-half years of full time clinical research at St. Mark’s Hospital London and later undertook further additional specialist training in the investigation of small bowel disorders using single-balloon enteroscopy, device assisted enteroscopy and also video-capsule endoscopy at St. Thomas’ Hospital London.
Dr McLaughlin remains actively involved in inflammatory bowel disease research at St. Mark’s Hospital and King's College London. He has published two book chapters on inflammatory bowel disease and numerous papers in medical journals on inflammatory bowel disease, endoscopy, video capsule endoscopy and coeliac disease. In addition he has particular experience in the investigation and management of pouchitis, ileo-anal pouch dysfunction and coeliac disease. He is an author of the current British Society of Gastroenterology coeliac disease guidelines.
Dr McLaughlin is clinical lead in Video-Capsule endoscopy and Nutrition at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

Research
Dr McLaughlin completed two-and-half years of full time clinical research at St. Mark’s Hospital, King’s College, and Imperial College London. His research investigated the hypothesis that a bacterial dysbiosis is fundamental to the inflammatory process which occurs in up to half of patients with ulcerative colitis who undergo restorative proctocolectomy.
Further work included developing new treatment strategies for pre-pouch ileitis and pouchitis in patients with ulcerative colitis. His research led to 11 first author publications in leading scientific journals and nine oral presentations at various national and international medical conferences.
