About
Dr Roshan Amarasena is a Consultant Rheumatologist at Nuffield Health, specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis, joint pain and autoimmune conditions. He has particular expertise in managing inflammatory arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, helping patients reduce pain, improve mobility and maintain quality of life. Alongside his private practice, he is the lead rheumatologist at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads and develops rheumatology services.
Dr Amarasena completed his initial medical training in Sri Lanka before moving to the UK to continue his postgraduate training. He became a Member and later a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London). In 2012, he was awarded a prestigious British Travelling Fellowship, which included training at a centre of excellence for vasculitis. He also completed a Master’s degree in Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford, focusing on osteobiology in rheumatic diseases. He went on to complete specialist rheumatology training in the North West Deanery, alongside research work in Leeds.
Dr Amarasena has broad experience across all areas of rheumatology, including both outpatient care and the management of complex conditions. His clinical interests include inflammatory arthritis, autoimmune diseases and musculoskeletal disorders, and he is committed to providing clear, personalised care for every patient.

Research
He is involved in many research studies where he is the Principal investigator or Co-Investigator.
He supervises a PhD student who is undertaking research on biomarkers to identify response to biological therapies which would aid in developing precision and personalised selections of therapies to treat psoriatic arthritis. In addition, he is the educational supervisor of the postgraduate trainees in the West Midlands Deanery, middle grade doctors in rheumatology He also regularly teaches 4th and 5th-year medical students from Keele University in the clinics and won the Trialog award for teaching awarded by the Keele University. He conducts dedicated teaching clinics for the registrars and is apparently the only such clinic in the region. He is also involved in the national recruitment for rheumatology trainees.
Dr Amarasena also works on the
advisory board of pharmaceutical companies and is part of the regional
specialised commissioning group for the West Midlands for high-cost drugs, and
also instrumental in developing regional guidelines.
