About
Dr Robert Callaghan is a Consultant Rheumatologist who qualified in 1996 and has held his NHS Consultant Rheumatology post in Gwent, South Wales since 2005. He brings extensive experience in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of rheumatological conditions.
He has broad clinical expertise in general rheumatology, including the management of inflammatory arthritis, autoimmune musculoskeletal disease, and complex joint disorders.His clinical practice includes detailed patient assessment, diagnostic screening and the delivery of tailored treatment plans.
He has a particular clinical interest in connective tissue diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE/lupus), Sjögren’s syndrome, myositis, scleroderma and vasculitis. His work often involves the diagnosis and long-term management of these complex conditions, supporting patients through both acute treatment phases and ongoing care pathways.

Education
Dr Callaghan trained at Cardiff University, followed by higher specialist training in the West Midlands.

Any spare time he has is spent with his wife and 3 children. He is also a keen tennis player and has played competitive tennis since his younger days.
