About
Dr Ferguson is a consultant Haematologist working at the University Hospitals of Birmingham NHS Trust. He specialises in treating patients with both malignant blood cancers and those with general, benign blood disorders.
He has a particular interest in treating patients with myeloma, lymphoma and myeloid malignancies, bone marrow transplantation and CAR T cell therapy. Dr Ferguson is the Director of the Midlands and Wales Advanced Therapies Treatment Centres (MW-ATTC) focused on the delivery of next generation, advanced clinical trials and therapies for patients across the region.
He has previously held the post of lead clinician for Haematology at two of the biggest Haematology departments in the West Midlands at University Hospitals Birmingham and University Hospitals of North Midlands.
He has a strong interest in cancer diagnostics and has held a leadership position within the West Midlands Cancer Alliance with a focus on faster cancer diagnostic pathways and supported the role out of novel non-site specific cancer diagnostic pathways across the West Midlands.
He is strongly patient focused and dedicated to delivering the best in patient care.
Education and research
Dr Ferguson graduated in medicine from the University of Birmingham having previously attained a first class honours degree in Biomedical Science and a PhD in Cancer research with a focus on molecular biology.
His haematology training was principally based at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham.
During this time he was appointed as an academic clinical lecturer and aligned clinical commitments with clinical research. His areas for research were the delivery of early phase clinical trials, bone marrow transplantation and basic scientific research into the genetics of acute myeloid leukaemia which he undertook at Oxford University and the University of Birmingham.
He is an author on a number of high impact clinical
research publications and has received a national award for his research. He
previously held a consultant position at University Hospitals of North Midlands
NHS trust.
