About
I am a Consultant Nephrologist based in Derby, with over 20 years of experience caring for patients with kidney conditions. I qualified in medicine in Mumbai, India, before completing my specialist training in nephrology both in India and later in the UK, including in Leeds and London.
I see patients with a wide range of kidney problems, including chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, acute kidney injury, and more complex conditions such as vasculitis and glomerular disease. I aim to provide clear explanations and practical advice, helping patients understand their diagnosis and feel confident in their treatment plan.
Alongside my clinical work, I have held a number of senior leadership roles within the NHS and currently work as Deputy Medical Director and Chief Clinical Information Officer at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton. This means I also help improve how healthcare services use digital systems and data to deliver safer, more effective care.
I have a particular interest in the early detection and management of acute kidney injury and have been involved in national programmes to improve how this is identified and treated across the UK. I am also a strong supporter of home-based therapies, including peritoneal dialysis, where appropriate.
My approach is always patient‑centred. I take time to listen, explain things in straightforward language, and work with each patient to choose the best possible care for their individual needs.
Please note, Dr Kolhe's initial appointments will all be conducted via telephone.

Research
My research interests focus on acute kidney injury (AKI), including its clinical outcomes and the economic impact it has on healthcare systems. I have been involved as a local principal investigator in the European Trial of Extended Haemodialysis in Light Chain Nephropathy, which looks at kidney and patient survival outcomes in individuals with cast nephropathy by comparing different dialysis approaches. I also have a strong interest in understanding the long-term outcomes of acute kidney injury.
I am an active member of the Acute Renal Injury Research in Derby (ARID) group, where I lead prospective research into the epidemiology of AKI. This work looks at how early specialist nephrology input can influence patient outcomes, particularly in relation to survival and the development of chronic kidney disease over a 10-year period.
In addition, I have a research interest in renovascular hypertension, including the role of vascular interventions and their long-term effects on kidney function and overall renal outcomes.
