About
Dr Mayooran Shanmuganathan is a Consultant Cardiologist based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and Harefield Hospital in London. He sees patients with all cardiac symptoms and conditions and has specialist expertise in heart failure—particularly advanced heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. He is also skilled in cardiac MRI and cardiac catheterisation.
Dr Shanmuganathan has consistently received outstanding feedback from his patients and was awarded Certificates of Excellence in 2023 and 2025 by the iWantGreatCare team for delivering exceptional care.
He graduated in Medicine from Imperial College London in 2008, achieving first-class honours in his intercalated BSc and receiving multiple academic prizes, including an award from the Wellcome Trust. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2011.
He undertook cardiology training at several leading London teaching hospitals and was awarded the London Heart Failure Fellowship, completing advanced sub-specialist training in mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation at Barts Heart Centre and Harefield Hospital. He also trained in cardiac MRI at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
Upon completing his training, Dr Shanmuganathan was awarded dual accreditation in General Internal Medicine and Cardiology by the UK General Medical Council.
Between 2022 and 2024, he served as a Consultant Cardiologist at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals), where he led the heart failure service.
Dr Shanmuganathan received a Graduate Scholarship from the University of Oxford to conduct research into the use of cardiac MRI in acute myocardial injury, obtaining a DPhil (PhD). His research has been published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and presented at major international cardiology conferences.

Dr Shanmuganathan has a long track record in medical research. His research interests are in cardiac MRI, myocardial infarction, heart failure, coronary physiology and coronary microvascular disease and COVID-19.
He has served as principal investigator in several multi-centre clinical trials in heart failure.
