About

Dr Malcolm Finlay is a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist at Barts Heart Centre, and holds honorary positions at UCL and QMUL. He is an expert in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) with catheter ablation, and in the diagnosis and management of a full range of heart rhythm problems. He has a particular interest and expertise in the development of medical technologies, particularly those for minimally invasive catheter treatments of heart disease, and how these can best be used to help patients.

Clinically, he has developed particular skills in minimising x-ray use during procedures, and has lead the introduction of many safety techniques within the department at Barts, including the use of checklists and highly consistent and reproducible procedures. He actively uses safety management skills learnt during aviation training to improve patient safety during procedures. His introduction of such methods to the department at Barts has contributed to low complication rates. Such skills also lend themselves to efficient, calm and successful management of complex situations which may occur from time to time during invasive procedures.

Dr Finlay read Medicine at Oxford University (BA 1998, BMBCh 2001). He was awarded his PhD in the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmia in 2014 from University College London and appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre in the same year, with honorary positions at University College London and Queen Mary University of London.
