About
Dr Gompels is an experienced Consultant Rheumatologist with expertise in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of rheumatological and autoimmune conditions. He also specialises in General Internal Medicine, providing holistic care for patients with complex or multi-system disease.
He completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Cambridge and undertook postgraduate training at Imperial College London, where he was also awarded a PhD from the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, focusing on advanced research in inflammatory and immune-mediated disorders.
Dr Gompels is the Clinical Service Lead for Rheumatology at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and also serves as the Trust’s Chief Clinical Information Officer, playing a key role in the development and integration of digital healthcare systems to improve patient care and outcomes.
He manages a broad spectrum of conditions, including inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis), connective tissue diseases, vasculitis, and other complex autoimmune disorders. He is committed to delivering personalised, evidence-based care, ensuring patients fully understand their diagnosis and treatment options.
Dr Gompels is known for his approachable and compassionate manner, creating a supportive and reassuring environment for patients. He combines clinical expertise with a strong focus on patient-centred care, working collaboratively with individuals to optimise long-term health and quality of life.
