Dr Kristin Veighey

Dr Kristin Veighey is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in General Practice at the University of Southampton, a Consultant Nephrologist, and an academic primary care researcher whose work focuses on improving the early detection and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD). She graduated in Medicine from Queen’s University Belfast and completed postgraduate training in Wessex and North Thames. Following a PhD in Clinical Pharmacology and Nephrology at University College London, she was a key member of the multinational NIHR-MRC EME-funded REPAIR study, which demonstrated the potential of remote ischaemic preconditioning to improve long-term kidney transplant outcomes.

After completing nephrology training in Portsmouth, she worked for five years as a Consultant Nephrologist at the Wessex Kidney Centre and has continued to practice as a Consultant Nephrologist in the independent sector since 2022. In 2021, she transitioned into academic general practice as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow, motivated by a belief that the greatest opportunity to improve outcomes for patients lies in primary care.

She currently leads NIHR-funded research on CKD risk stratification, chairs the UK Kidney Association Primary Care Special Interest Group, serves as Clinical Lead for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight SPOT-CKD program, and is Co-Director of the Southampton Academy of Research, where she leads the UHS Research Leaders’ Programme.
