About

Dr Rajappan is a Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist. He has particular expertise in managing heart arrhythmias – electrical disorders of the heart’s beating rhythm.

He was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in 2007. Before that he completed advanced training in managing cardiac rhythm disorders at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London with pioneering cardiologist and electrophysiologist, Professor Richard Schilling.

Each year he sees and treats hundreds of patients with rhythm disorders such as atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation. One of the key treatments is catheter ablation in which a catheter is inserted via a vein and threaded round to the heart. Heat from an electrode (metal ring) at the tip of the catheter destroys the problem tissue and restores normal heart rhythm. A benefit of this treatment is there is no longer need for medication.

The patients Dr Rajappan sees will typically have one or more of the following: rapid palpitations, irregular heart beats, ectopic or ‘skipped’ beats, slow heart beats, dizzy spells, blackouts, breathlessness.

Diagnosis of their condition is backed up by evidence from the Oxford Private Heart and Lung Centre’s state of the art cardiac imaging suite.

Other interests

Dr Rajappan supports several patient  heart charities. He is an Executive Committee Member of the Arrhythmia Alliance and has contributed to parliamentary campaigns to improve the availability of ablation treatment for patients throughout the UK. He is also  the Royal Air Force Honorary Civilian Consultant Advisor in Electrophysiology and

A member of the Secretary of State for Transport’s Honorary Medical Advisory Panel on driving and disorders of the cardiovascular system (specialising in Electrophysiology)

Personal interests

Outside of work Dr Rajappan enjoys skiing and scuba diving – having gained the Professional Association of Diving Instructors Advanced Open Water Certificate. He also has a private pilot’s license.
