About
Dr Pepperell is a highly experienced Consultant Physician with over 20 years of full-time NHS practice. He specialises in respiratory medicine, sleep disorders and general internal medicine, providing expert assessment and management of a wide range of conditions affecting breathing and overall health.
He completed his undergraduate medical training in Cambridge and London before undertaking specialist training in anaesthesia, mechanical ventilation and intensive care medicine in Bristol and the South West. He later completed his higher specialist training in Oxford, following an extensive research fellowship at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals focused on sleep disorders and cardiovascular disease.
Dr Pepperell runs a busy clinical practice, offering specialist assessment and treatment for the full spectrum of respiratory conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, and complex sleep-related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea. He is committed to delivering clear, patient-centred care supported by the latest evidence-based medical approaches.
He has particular expertise in advanced diagnostic and interventional respiratory procedures, including bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), and medical thoracoscopy, which are used to investigate and diagnose lung conditions with precision.
Dr Pepperell provides access to comprehensive diagnostic testing, including spirometry and pulmonary function testing. He also leads a fully equipped sleep service, offering both in-laboratory and home-based multichannel video sleep studies to support the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders. Testing is available at the Nuffield Hospital, with more advanced investigations undertaken at the Parkside Private Patient Wing and the Somerset Lung Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital.Find out more on his website.
Special interests
Dr Pepperell has been secretary of the British Thoracic Society, on the Committee of the Royal College of Physicians, and representative Member on the NHS England Long term Plan Delivery Board. He has contributed to NICE guidance, Health Technology Authority appraisals, international respiratory medicine guidelines and NHS England Policies.
As former director of research for Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, he has
recruited thousands of patients to practice-changing clinical trials in sleep
apnoea, COVID and lung disease. He has extensive experience in Medicolegal
report writing for Asbestos-related lung disease, sleep disorders, personal
injury and occupational lung disease.
Personal interests
Dr Pepperell has a
strong interest in rowing having rowed for Cambridge in the boat race. He
continues his involvement in water sports through rowing commentary, fishing, kayaking
and surfing. A keen gardener and married to Sally a GP, Dr Pepperell
keeps bees, sheep, chickens and breeds labradors.

Research
Dr Pepperell has a strong research background in sleep apnoea and cardiovascular disease with over 30 peer-reviewed publications.
He runs an active research programme. He is principle investigator for over five national trials running at present and supports a team of three research nurses. He has recruited more patients than any other centre in the UK to 2 of these trials in the last 2 years.
Dr Pepperell sits on the steering committee for four national trials and is
invited to review health technology authority and Medical research Council
Training Fellowship applications.
