Dr Rees studied medicine at The Royal London Hospital and completed postgraduate training at various London teaching hospitals including Barts’ and the London, Guy’s and St Thomas’  and St George's Hospitals He completed his Medical Doctorate at University College London.

Jonathan has worked at all levels of Sports Medicine. He was Physician to the Great Britain 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games team and Physician to the 2012 London Olympic Games. He has also worked in professional football, rugby union and with numerous other sports including Formula One. He is regularly featured in national media and has been interviewed for both BBC TV and ITV national news. He is the only Sport and Exercise Medicine Consultant in Cambridge who also has an NHS practice.

In Rheumatology, Jonathan is an expert in the evolving technique of musculoskeletal ultrasound and is introducing this technique to his Rheumatology patients at Addenbrooke’s hospital. This allows more accurate diagnosis and treatment of his Rheumatology patients.

He additionally is a renowned expert in the management of tendon disorders and has published award winning research in this area.

Jonathan arrived at Addenbrooke’s in 2013 having previously worked as a Consultant for nine years concurrently at both Headley Court the Military Rehabilitation Centre and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals. He is an expert in the management of tendon disorders and has published award winning research in this area.

Special interests

Jonathan is actively involved in teaching and on passing knowledge on to the next generation of Doctors. He is Programme Director for Sports Medicine training in the East of England. He is a lecturer and examiner for the Sports Medicine MSc at Barts’ and the London and is an external examiner for the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Dr Rees has published extensively in the fields of Rheumatology and Sports Medicine. His 2013 paper ‘Tendons; time to revisit inflammation’ was the second most read in the field of orthopaedics in the world in 2013.
