About

Jonathan Bowling is a Consultant Dermatologist and previously Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, Department of Dermatology. 

He has nearly 20 years experience in the field and was the skin cancer lead for Oxford and a past chair of the West Thames Valley specialist skin cancer MDT. 

His main interest is skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, and has pioneered the use of dermoscopy in the UK for mole screening and for the early diagnosis of melanoma.

Other interests

He has pioneered training in the enhanced diagnostic technique, dermoscopy, in the UK with over 400 British dermatologists and plastic surgeons and over 1500 clinicians attending his dermoscopy courses to date, including the Annual International Dermoscopy Course for Plastic Surgeons.

He is the UK board member of the International Dermoscopy Society (IDS), faculty member of the 1st & 2nd World Congress of the International Dermoscopy Society. 

His opinion is frequently sought by the media. Recent examples include Embarrassing Illnesses (Channel 4), Daily Mail, The Sun, Tatler, Red, Cosmopolitan, BBC TV, Online and Radio 5 Live.

Research

Mr Bowling is regularly invited to lecture on skin cancer diagnosis across the UK and overseas. He has published extensively on skin cancer and is the author of the award winning textbook Diagnostic Dermoscopy: The Illustrated Guide published by Wiley-Blackwell.

His research interests include the development of a validated scoring system for determining diagnostic accuracy in skin cancer screening clinics.

He has published extensively on skin cancer diagnosis including producing international guidelines on introducing dermoscopy into clinical practice: Bowling et al. Dermoscopy Key Points: Recommendations from the International Dermoscopy society,. Dermatology 2007; 214(1):3-5
