About

Dr John McAuley is a Consultant Neurologist with over 25 years’ experience diagnosing and treating the full range of neurological conditions. He practises at King George Hospital, Ilford, and Queen’s Hospital, Romford, and holds an Honorary Senior Lecturer position at Queen Mary University of London.

After graduating from Cambridge University in 1989, he completed his early medical training at Manchester Royal Infirmary before undertaking specialist neurology training on the North Thames rotation and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. His MD thesis on motor control earned him the prestigious Ralph Noble Prize. He was appointed Consultant in 2001 and elected FRCP in 2004.

Dr McAuley has extensive expertise in conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, tremor, movement disorders, migraine, vertigo, epilepsy and stroke.

He established an electrophysiological research laboratory investigating motor control and the mechanisms underlying movement disorders. His published research has attracted over 2,000 citations, reflecting his significant contribution to the field, and he has applied this research to the treatment of Parkinson's disease and tremor and to neurostimulation for treatment of movement disorders, intractable pain and refractory epilepsy.

To promote education in his field, Dr McAuley manages a web site, the Neurology Online Journal Club, for critical appraisal of research papers in Neurology. This popular site has received over 20,000 views.

Medical management requires a holistic understanding of all the treatments a patient may be taking and, as longstanding Chair of his hospital Trust's medications committee, Dr McAuley has vital knowledge in this area beyond his own field of Neurology.

Patients value Dr McAuley for his clear explanations, thorough assessments and his balanced, evidence‑based approach to managing both common and complex neurological conditions.
