About
Dr Ioana Onac is a Consultant Rheumatologist at University Hospitals Sussex, where she has worked since January 2023. She sees patients with a wide range of rheumatology conditions and runs specialist clinics in connective tissue disease, vasculitis and myositis.
She has a strong academic background, graduating in 2004. She first completed specialist training in Rehabilitation Medicine, followed by a PhD. She later undertook further specialist training in Rheumatology and General Internal Medicine, achieving full accreditation (CCT) in 2022.
Dr Onac has a particular interest in autoimmune rheumatic diseases, including connective tissue disease (CTD), inflammatory muscle disease (myositis) and vasculitis. She developed this focus during her specialist training and completed additional advanced training in connective tissue disease at King’s College London.
Alongside her clinical work, she is actively involved in research. She has published 12 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to a medical textbook chapter.
She is also committed to teaching and regularly delivers rheumatology lectures to medical students at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
Dr Onac is a member of the British Society for Rheumatology and the British Medical Association.

Research
Dr Onac is actively involved in research being principal investigator and sub-investigator in a few clinical trials currently as she has been throughout her training. She has successfully completed her PhD in chronic sciatic pain secondary to lumbar disk hernia, in 2012. She has published 12 papers and contributed to one medical textbook chapter during her career.
