About

Professor Ibrahim Fahal is a senior Consultant Nephrologist at Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital, with extensive expertise in the investigation and management of acute and chronic kidney disease. His clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of nephrology, including glomerular disease, hypertensive renal disease, diabetic nephropathy, electrolyte disorders, and renal complications of systemic illness. He provides specialist consultations and diagnostic assessment at Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital.

Professor Fahal has been a consultant since 1997 and holds a substantive NHS post at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, where he leads on complex renal medicine and contributes to multidisciplinary care pathways. He is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, with an active role in postgraduate training and clinical education.

He completed his medical degree at the University of Khartoum and undertook higher specialist training in general medicine and nephrology at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. His research into muscle dysfunction in chronic kidney disease led to the award of an MD, and he is recognised for defining the concept of uraemic sarcopenia, now widely referenced in nephrology literature.

Professor Fahal has an established academic profile, with publications in renal physiology, chronic kidney disease progression, and renal‑related muscle pathology. He serves as a reviewer and editorial board member for several nephrology journals and contributes to regional and international professional bodies.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London and Glasgow) and a member of the American Society of Nephrology, reflecting his standing within the specialty.

Research

ProfessorFahal's research interest is in muscle weakness and fatigue in patients with chronic kidney disease, which led to an MD degree from the University of Liverpool.  He has continued with these interests and has now joined the term "uraemic sarcopenia" to highlight the problem of muscle wasting in patients with chronic kidney disease.  He has published widely in many medical journals.

Professor Fahal is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London and the American Society of Nephrology.  He is a manuscript reviewer for various journals.  He is also on the editorial board of the Arab and the African Associations of Nephrology journals.
