About
Dr Freddie Burgess is a highly specialised Consultant Ophthalmologist and Eye Surgeon with expert experience in adult strabismus (squint) surgery and paediatric ophthalmology. He treats both children and adults, offering advanced care for complex eye alignment and vision conditions.
He completed his ophthalmology specialist training in Edinburgh before undertaking advanced fellowship training in strabismus surgery and paediatric ophthalmology at the internationally recognised Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. Dr Burgess performs cataract surgery in adults, children and neonates, with a strong focus on achieving the best possible visual outcomes at every stage of life.
Dr Burgess currently practises as a Consultant in NHS Lothian, working at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion and the Royal Hospital for Children & Young People in Edinburgh. He is the lead clinician for retinopathy of prematurity in Edinburgh and provides a specialist service for double vision, including surgical and non‑surgical treatments such as Botox injections for strabismus and blepharospasm.
In addition to his clinical work, he holds an honorary research position at the University of St Andrews and is actively involved in training future ophthalmic surgeons. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a member of BIPOSA and AAPOS.
