About

Dr Dennis Barnes is a highly experienced Consultant Physician specialising in diabetes and endocrinology, with over 25 years of clinical experience in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of hormone and metabolic conditions. He qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1986, with an early research focus on diabetic kidney disease. He remains a member of the European Diabetic Nephropathy Study Group.

Dr Barnes has worked as a Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology since 1996 and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in 2001. He provides specialist outpatient care within a clinic setting, supporting patients with a wide range of endocrine and metabolic conditions through accurate diagnosis, personalised treatment plans and long-term management.

His clinical expertise includes all general areas of diabetes care, including Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, insulin therapy, and advanced treatment approaches such as insulin pump therapy. He also manages a broad range of endocrine disorders, providing comprehensive assessment, investigation, and ongoing therapy to optimise patient outcomes and quality of life.

Dr Barnes was Clinical Lead for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust from 2007 to 2012, where he played a key role in developing specialist diabetes services. This included establishing one of the largest insulin pump services in Kent, improving access to advanced treatment and patient education.

In addition to his clinical work, he has held several senior leadership and educational roles, including:

  • Chairman of the Drugs & Therapeutics Committee
  • Lead DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) Doctor Educator
  • Consultant and SAS Medical Appraiser
  • Leadership Tutor

Dr Barnes has a strong commitment to medical education and clinical standards. He is an MRCP PACES Examiner and was appointed Visiting Senior Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2021, contributing to training in clinical assessment, diagnosis and patient-centred care.

He retired from his NHS consultant post in February 2021 but continues to see patients privately in Tunbridge Wells, providing expert diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management for diabetes and endocrine conditions within a dedicated clinic environment.
